The Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona (often simply referred to by its founding name Cercle Artístic de Barcelona , also abbreviated RCAB ), the Royal Circle of Artists of Barcelona, was created in 1881 by various artists, including the painters Eliseo Meifrén , Modest Urgell , Joaquim Mir , Ramón Casas , Isidre Nonell , Francesc and Josep Masriera and others founded. The aim of the grouping was the general promotion of art activities. In particular, they campaigned for the art of Catalan Modernism . The artist association had in 1916 by King Alfonso XIII. received the title "Reial" (Royal). This association of artists should not be confused with the other major Barcolenese artists' association, the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc .

At the beginning, this art association was housed in the La Canonja building. After several moves, his final place of residence had been found in the old Palau Pignatelli of the Girona family in Carrer dels Arcs No 5 (Street of the Arches) in the Barri Gòtic of Barcelona. The artists were organized in different sections dealing with specific art subjects. Particularly noteworthy in the Palau Pignatelli are the large studio and drawing rooms in which the painters found living models for their artistic activity. Concerts, exhibitions and lectures have also been held in these halls. The Reial Cercle Artístic has traditionally always held the carnival balls in the Gran Teatre del Liceu .

Surreal both in setting and experience, this permanent show is a wonderful dedication to one of Spain’s most famous artists and will excite fans and convert sceptics. If you can’t make it to the museum in his birthplace of Figueres for a Dali fix, this comes a close second. Befittingly set in the Gothic district, his oil paintings, drawings and sculptures fill every corner of the beautiful Cercle Artistica building. Behind his tiny bronze sculpture, “Surrealistic Angel”, head through sweeping red velvet curtains into what feels almost like a mausoleum for the great man himself. Tiny sculptures balanced upon stone and copper poles fill the room, and the walls are covered in photos of Dali on his deathbed, those taken while he filmed “Venus Dream” and his sculptures of Jesus (one of the main themes of the exhibit). Horses painted with crowns of thorns seem to be the natural progression of the show from the rooms dedicated to Jesus, and each room has at least one epic bronze sculpture. The range of mediums and the sheer size of so much of his work makes this a truly fascinating experience; one of the best exhibits in Barcelona, you might need two trips to take it all in.

Seating will be limited, so don't be disappointed. Pre-registration only - register today!
